Objectives The course introduces students chronologically to the base-knowledge analysis of social structures and problems in contemporary society as well as within Austria and Europe. Empirical facts, data, corresponding concepts, and stastics will be analyzed. A special focus is placed on conveying and understanding causes, correlations and effects on socially structured conditions and understanding developments in central areas of contemporary society. Students will acquire skills to independently provide information on socially structured characteristics of society and their reciprocity as well as critically reflect on their significance.

Criteria for evaluation Grades will be based on

  • A final examination (total of 40 points possible; 26 points required to pass)
  • Results of voluntary participation in discussions, homework assignments, Wiki contributions (max. 20 point) in MOODLE.

  • Discussions on specific aspects of each introduced topic
  • voluntary preparation of separate tasks (suchas participating in discussions, completing homework assignments, completing Wiki contributions)
