Lernergebnisse
Kompetenzen
(*)Students completing the course will gain hands-on experience with research-guided laboratory experiments, fostering advanced, safe, and self-reliant practical skills in synthetic inorganic, organometallic, and materials chemistry. They will learn to manage air-, moisture-, and light-sensitive compounds and acquire the ability to safely handle corrosive or toxic substances. This training equips students with the competence to work responsibly and efficiently in chemical laboratory environments usually found in synthetic chemistry. Students will also gain the ability to evaluate and modify synthetic procedures found in original literature work and understand the scientific background of their lab work.
Fertigkeiten Kenntnisse
(*)The contents of the course will enable them to • Understand and implement safety protocols for handling chemicals and equipment (k2, k3, k4, k5) • Conduct and assess standard and advanced inorganic syntheses, including air- and moisture-sensitive reactions (k3, k4, k5) • Operate equipment such as spectrometers, Schlenk lines, advanced reaction apparatuses and glassware (k2, k3, k4) • Safely manage corrosive, flammable, toxic, or light-sensitive compounds (k2, k3, k4, k5) • Document experimental observations and analyze results (k1, k2, k4) • Troubleshoot reaction setups and to optimize conditions (k4, k5) • Apply theoretical knowledge to practical challenges (k1, k2, k3, k4) (*)• Chemical safety principles • Synthesis of inorganic and organometallic compounds and their properties • Spectroscopic methods like NMR and IR • Schlenk techniques and performance of reactions under inert conditions • Experimental design for advanced synthetic reactions • Practical and theoretical main group and transition metal chemistry • Role of ligands and synthesis of ligands like Cp, phosphines, CO, amines, etc. • Documentation of lab work
Beurteilungskriterien (*)Entrance examination covering the necessary theoretical background, evaluation of the practical work actually carried out (including safety aspects and full documentation of all experiments in the lab protocols), as well as the result of a final oral examination.
Lehrmethoden (*)Research-guided chemical lab work including synthesis and product characterization with individual supervision by experienced assistants.
Abhaltungssprache Englisch
Literatur (*)Detailed lab instructions and required literature ressources will be provided on an individual basis.
