| More specifically, upon completion of the course they will be able to
-	carry out fundamental synthesis procedures following reported literature procedures (k3, k6)
-	evaluate the basic safety relevant aspects of organic synthesis procedures (k5)
-	carry out standard lab procedures to purify and isolate organic molecules such as crystallizations, distillations, column chromatography (k3, k4)
-	characterize and analyze small organic molecules by spectroscopic means, i.e. NMR spectroscopy (k3, k4, k5)
-	document their laboratory work in protocol books (k4)

The course is divided into five consecutive sections devoted to the following experimental manipulations and reaction types:
-	preparative separation of organic compounds based on their acid/base properties and characterization by physical properties (Melting point, boiling point, refractive index and simple IR, MS and NMR spectra)
-	nucleophilic aliphatic substitution reactions
-	reactions of carbonyl compounds
-	electrophilic addition, elimination, reduction and oxidation reactions
-	reactions of aromatic compounds
