Learning Outcomes

The students

  • know the basic structure and functions of networked ICT systems and can explain how these form the basis of digitalization;
  • are proficient in using office and web applications and can explain the advantages of open source software. They can explain and apply the models and concepts behind the individual applications independently of specific products or versions;
  • are able to solve complex business tasks using spreadsheets by combining the knowledge imparted in the course with their ability to independently research missing knowledge elements on the Internet and analyze this information and explain their contribution to a professional solution and support this with appropriate arguments;
  • understand the theoretical foundations of the relational database in comparison with other alternative database models. They can understand and explain the relational database model so that they are able to formulate SQL queries of simple and medium complexity themselves and explain why the solution they have developed makes technical sense;
  • know process models and can create them themselves for simple tasks. They can analyze more complex models and question their consistency or freedom from errors with their business expertise;
  • are aware of the technical, social and legal framework conditions, can explain their consequences for digitalization and are therefore able to propose management decisions and provide convincing written reasons for them.

Learning Outcomes

The students

LO2: can use relevant spreadsheet applications effectively and efficiently (k3, k4). They can solve practical business problems by generating advanced functions (k5, k6).
LO3: can communicate in writing in a business environment by creating professional documents with word processing programs or using current collaboration tools on the web (k3).
LO4: are able to analyze more complex relational data models (k3, k4). They can construct advanced database queries to solve complex business problems (k5, k6).
LO5: are able to create simple process models themselves and analyze more complex models (k3, k4).
LO6: can use basic web technologies (HTML, CSS) to implement simple websites (k3).
The module offers students a well-founded overview of the technical and methodological fundamentals of digitalization, particularly with the following content:

  • Structure and functionality of hardware and software: Understanding the basic components and how they work together in ICT systems.
  • Use and adaptation of office and web applications: Effective use of open source software, regardless of specific products or versions.
  • Documentation and collaboration on the web: Use of current tools for efficient collaboration.
  • Fundamentals of networks, operating systems and database systems: Introduction to the infrastructure of digitalization.
  • Data models: Working with structured (ER/UML, relational) and semi-structured/document-oriented (XML, etc.) data models.
  • Process models (BPMN 2.0): Modeling and optimization of business processes.
  • Simple relational database queries and analyses (SQL): Formulating SQL queries for data manipulation and analysis.
  • Introduction to web development with HTML & CSS: Creating simple web content and understanding web design principles.
  • Information security and data protection: Technical, social and legal frameworks.
  • Social and legal frameworks: Digital corporate responsibility; copyright, protection of data, software and digital media.

Learning Outcomes

LO1: Students have a basic understanding of ICT systems, relevant hardware and software components, network technologies and their roles in digitalization. They know and understand scientific, economic and legal perspectives of digitalization. (k1, k2)
