Objectives |
The course focuses on the functions and importance of the public sector in a market economy, the most important ways in which the state influences production and consumption of goods (taxes, government spending, social security) in a market economy, how this affects the market's function, and the distribution of income. Students will become familiar with main economic arguments as to the "limits of their market" and the consequences of the state's role in a market economy.

Introduction: core economic concepts and the role of the state; The public sector: institutions, key figures, comparisons; Basic principles of taxation and main taxes in Austria: The effect of a tax in partial market: incidence and welfare effects; economic reasons of state activity: allocation, distribution, Stabilization; theory of market failure: externalities and public goods; Voting; Redistribution by the state; Social policy; Economics and politics.

Criteria for evaluation |
Requirements to take the examination: submission of 2 homework assignments (passing grades, interactive elements), opportunity to earn extra credit.
Final examination, re-sit examination (if necessary)
