Objectives The course provides an introduction to the methods, areas of application and results of oral history; students will discuss the possibilities, advantages, limitations, and disadvantages of this practice and acquire a better understanding of oral history through the practical application of these practices.
Subject Students will explore the methods of oral history by presenting case examples and looking at their analytical potential as well as their most important areas of application; students will reference an extensive archive of oral history (records at the Institute of Economic and Social History) to present possibilities as well as the limitations of these practices and provide instruction for student projects. Material provided will enhance the presentation of methods and will be used to help develop an alternative view of social, political and gender history in Austria.
Criteria for evaluation Successful completion of a written test that will count as the course examination.
Methods Lecture; maintaining a written journal to prepare for in-depth discussions and debates; active student participation in discussions and group work; providing e-Learning elements to improve communication with students.
