Objectives The course “KS Empirische Wirtschaftsforschung” serves as an introduction to the field of Econometrics. Parallel to this course, students should also enroll in the IK “Empirische Wirtschaftsforschung”. The combination of both courses aims to support students in developing skills enabling students to understand and assess empirical work. The course focuses particularly on the intuition of writing empirical essays, recognizing the range of empirical methods and be able to recognize applied data in order to write a sound finding on selected empirical approaches. After completing both courses, students should be in a position to independently conduct empirical (econometric) research and apply commonly used terminology. These skills are not only required for economic analyses, but are also valuable for business practices as well as the ability to assess (economic)-political debates. In addition, students will gradually learn to formulate their (own) basic empirical topics and collect data, select and apply the right empirical methods, and formulate a beneficial interpretation of empirical results. The IK course offers an introduction to the statistical/econometric software packet Stata. The course(s) have been designed for students studying business administration with a major in Economics and/or Management & Applied Economics, but are also open to other students of other majors enrolled at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Economics and Business (such as Business Informatics, Social Economics, and Sociology) interested in empirical issues, methods and interpreting results. Pre-requisites include base knowledge of Statistics and Mathematics. Previous knowledge of basic economic theory is beneficial.
