Competences
Upon completion of this course, students will have a sound understanding of important diagnostic methods in immunodermatology, including their application and limitations. Through guided, practice-oriented workshops, they will gain practical experience with commonly used diagnostic techniques and learn to interpret findings in a clinical context. In addition, the course strengthens students' ability to combine theoretical knowledge with practical observation and to address immunodermatological issues in a structured and systematic manner.

Criteria for evaluation
  • The course has an intrinsic examination character and attendance is compulsory. Even in the case of justified absence with the approval of the course instructor, a minimum attendance of 75% must be achieved. It is up to the course instructor to decide whether a substitute performance is required for a positive completion in the case of justified absence.
  • Students are required to acquire knowledge independently using the ‘inverted classroom’ teaching method in order to work on more complex tasks, group work, problem solving, discussions and feedback under the guidance of the lecturer.

Methods The course combines theoretical content with extensive practical training.

  • Theoretical introduction: Providing an overview of current diagnostic methods in immunodermatology, including:
    • Immunofluorescence and its application in dermatology
    • Preparation and analysis of skin samples
    • Dermatophyte diagnostics (conventional PCR and gel electrophoresis)
    • Quantitative PCR, RNA extraction and reverse transcription
    • Antibody detection in bullous skin diseases (e.g. enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, ELISA, for protein determination)
    • Cutaneous lymphomas and their diagnosis using flow cytometry (FACS) for clonality determination and analysis of surface markers
  • Hands-on workshops in to six groups: Students participate in supervised practical sessions, perform diagnostic techniques, interpret results and recognise technical limitations.
