Learning Outcomes
Competences
Students are able to carry out precise measurements, design and construct suitable measurement circuits, assess the influence of sources of interference and apply techniques for signal processing with a poor signal-to-noise ratio.
Skills Knowledge
More specifically, students will be able to,

  • Design, construct and test measurement circuits for the accurate measurement of signals (k3/4/5),
  • Perform automated computer-assisted measurement and analysis using the GPIB interface (k3/4),
  • Analyse and minimise the effects of conducted coupling mechanisms (inductive, capacitive, galvanic) on measurement and data lines (k4/5),
  • Evaluate the effects of electromagnetic interference on measurement circuits and implement appropriate mitigation measures (k3/4),
  • acquire and process signals with poor signal-to-noise ratio using lock-in amplifiers (k3/4),
  • perform high-precision current measurements to determine high-impedance resistances and the smallest capacitances and analyse the measured values (k3/4),
  • write measurement protocols according to scientific standards and document the measurement results (k5).
  • Principles of operation of precision measurement techniques
  • Knowledge of sources of interference and their effects on measurements
  • Function and use of the GPIB interface
  • Fundamentals of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)
  • Principle of operation and application of lock-in amplifiers
  • Methods for determining high ohmic resistances and very low capacitances
  • Understanding measurement uncertainties in precision measurement technology
