Kompetenzen
(*)Upon successfully completing the course, students are able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles and established concepts of low-dimensional quantum systems, covering the areas listed below. They can describe current research topics and open questions in zero-, one-, and two-dimensional systems, covering fundamental physical principles and applications.

This lecture is methodologically complemented by the exercise Physics of Low Dimensional Systems.

Fertigkeiten Kenntnisse
(*)Upon completing the course, students will possess the following skills. They are able to

  • explain and summarize key properties (electrical, optical) of semiconductors and apply them to nanostructures (k2/k3);
  • describe and compare different techniques to fabricate low-dimensional nanostructures, in particular heteroepitaxial methods (k2);
  • evaluate charge carrier properties in various potential wells and apply the knowledge to changing potential conditions, like coupled wells (k4);
  • explain and summarize charge carrier transport under electric and magnetic fields in low-dimensional structures and relate the knowledge to applications (k3).
(*)During the course, students will acquire knowledge in the following areas and concepts of the physics of low dimensional systems:

  • electronic properties of semiconductors in 3D, 2D, 1D and 0D;
  • optical properties of semiconductors in 3D, 2D, 1D and 0D;
  • fabrication of hetero-, quantum-wire, quantum dots and 2D material structures;
  • the quantum mechanics of potential wells of various shapes;
  • electrical transport on the nanoscale;
  • magnetotransport on the nanoscale;
  • quantum phenomena occurring at 2D magnetotransport.
Beurteilungskriterien (*)Evaluation criteria will be announced at the beginning of the semester.
Lehrmethoden (*)The class primarily consists of lectures on fundamental and current topics of low-dimensional semiconductor nanostructure systems. A script is available, and lecture notes are recorded using a tablet.
