Learning Outcomes
Competences
Students understand the basic principles of modern electronic communication systems. They can create simple models for these systems and use them to compute and interpret performance metrics such as signal-to-noise ratio, bit error rate, or spectral efficiency.
Skills Knowledge
Specifically, they can

  • create and analyze linear models for transmission systems (K3/4)
  • model and analyze communication channels (K3/4)
  • describe analog and linear digital modulation methods and determine and evaluate their performance (signal-to-noise ratio, bit error rate, spectral efficiency) (K3/4/5)
  • apply basic concepts of information theory to simple problems (K1/2/3)
  • describe and analyze simple stochastic channel access methods (K1/2/3/4)
  • Signals (deterministic and stochastic) and systems in communications
  • Fundamentals of information theory
  • Communication channels
  • Analog modulation (amplitude and frequency modulation)
  • Linear digital modulation methods
  • Optimal demodulation and detection
  • 1st Nyquist criterion
  • Communication networks
  • Deterministic and stochastic channel access methods
Criteria for evaluation Oral examination
