(*)Students will be introduced to the basics of polymer chemistry and chemical process engineering, focused on topics relevant to plastic engineers.
Fertigkeiten Kenntnisse
(*)More specifically, upon completion of the course, they will be able to:

  • Classify polymers according to their molecular structure and understand and explain structural isomerism. (k1, k2, k4, K5)
  • Understand and explain physico-chemical properties related to polymers. (k2)
  • Understand and explain the basics of chemistry and chemical processes. (k2)
  • Understand and explain polymerization, polyaddition, and polycondensation reactions. (k2)
  • Understand technical polymers and biopolymers besides their raw materials and production. (k1, k2)
(*)Underlying concepts and details of:

  • Molecular structure of thermoplastics, elastomers, and thermosets
  • Sequence isomerism, stereoisomerism (tacticity), and structural isomerism
  • Structure-property relationships of molecular weight, crystallinity, stiffness, and thermal behavior
  • Radical, ionic, and catalyzed polymerization
  • Polymerization processes
  • Polyolefines, polyesters, Styrene polymers, rubbers, resins, polyamides, polyurethanes, and epoxy resins
  • Basics for biopolymers (e.g., biodegradability, biodegradation process) using selected polymer examples (e.g., polyesters, starch, cellulose)
