Learning Outcomes
Competences
Students are able to carry out the (fracture mechanics) structural integrity assessment of plastic structural components. They understand the underlying methods, can apply them and interpret the results in the context of material behavior and safety assessment.
Skills Knowledge
In particular, they are able to

Explain the fundamentals of fracture mechanics and product life analysis and understand their significance for polymeric structures [k2].

Apply models to describe failure and fracture in polymeric materials and critically scrutinize the results [k3, k5].

Determine the stress intensity factors for different crack lengths [k3]

Explain non-destructive testing methods (NDTE, non-destructive testing and evaluation) [k2].

Work independently on a practical project on a selected topic, including theoretical description, experimental investigations and simulation [k5, k6]

Fundamentals of fracture mechanics and product life estimation

Introduction to non-destructive testing methods (NDTE, non-destructive testing and evaluation)

Theories of failure and fracture of polymers and polymer matrix-based composites

Experimental and numerical methods of fracture mechanics (application-oriented)

Criteria for evaluation Written examination to test knowledge

Assessment of the term paper with a focus on theoretical understanding

Presentation and discussion of the project results

Methods Block lectures to teach the fundamentals of (fracture mechanics) structural integrity assessment

Practical exercises and case studies on current research topics

Independent work on a project including theoretical description, practical implementation and documentation

Discussion of scientific publications and relevant literature
