Learning Outcomes
Competences
Students know and can reproduce the individual steps of a standardized LCA according to the ISO standards [k2].

They should be able to name common problems and offer, evaluate and compare solutions [k5].

In principle, they should understand the motivation behind the method and the considerations behind it [k2].

The steps of an LCA should be applied to simplified examples from the world of plastics technology [k3].

Particular attention should be paid to recycling and the associated multifunctionality problem. The background should be understood, the approaches applied, the results analyzed and evaluated [k3-k5].

Finally, the students should have various “rules of thumb” and an overview of popular LCA findings on the topic of plastics [k1].

Skills Knowledge
In particular, they are able to Name difficulties and common problems within the LCI phase and evaluate and compare different solutions. [k4 & k5]

Describe the multifunctional problem [k1 & k2], apply solution approaches [k3] and evaluate the results [k4, & k5].

reproduce and classify key results from LCAs on the topic of plastics [k1 & k2]

LCA according to ISO 14040 & 14044, new fields of research, working on selected simplified problems, the problem of multifunctionality and its solution.

Further information After successfully completing the course,

students know the structure of an LCA according to ISO 14040/44. students can check the quality of LCA studies with regard to compliance with ISO 14040/44 and draw simple conclusions about their quality. students will be familiar with important software tools and their functions and will be able to carry out simplified calculation examples (without software support). students are familiar with the most important impact categories and can give an overview of their scientific basis. students are familiar with important case studies from LCAs on the life cycle of plastics and plastic products and can answer qualitative statements about methodological problems. students will be able to reproduce and understand findings from the literature on "green" solutions to problems in plastics handling and will be able to name current challenges and fields of research.
