Students master the theoretical basics and the practical use of standards and formats of multimedia data. Students can evaluate components, architectures and trends of multimedia systems.
Skills Knowledge
Students

  • can conceptually describe the basic principles of coding for the media types text, images, audio and video and implement them algorithmically.
  • understand the structure and methodology of common standards (e.g. Unicode, GIF, mp3, MPEG).
  • can select the appropriate coding formats depending on their requirements and area of ​​application.
  • understand the connections between quality of coding and degree of compression.
  • can translate the basics of human perception into requirements for media formats.
  • Media-types (text, graphic/image, audio, video)
  • compression methods (lossy and lossless)
  • stand-alone multimedia systems (multimedia storage formats, synchronisation)
  • networked multimedia systems (multimedia streaming, QoS principles

and methods, digital TV)
