Learning Outcomes
Competences
Students understand the key procedures and techniques that are in use in modern biochemistry laboratory for the production and characterization of recombinant proteins.
Skills Knowledge
Students understand fundamental properties of the entire chain of events from the sequence of a gene to the production of a pure recombinant protein sample, enriched with suitable isotopes (k2). Students understand the difference between analytical and preparative approaches (k2,k5). Students are aware of several methods for protein purification, solubilization, and the usage of affinity tags and can devise a suitable protocol to obtain a target protein (k5,k6). Students can explain key quality control techniques like SDS-PAGE (k2). • biochemistry basics & cell culture • genes and genomes • protein structure and characterization • protein purification and engineering • isotope labelling methods for protein NMR spectroscopy • chromatography, affinity chromatography • protein mass spectrometry • protein electrophoresis & capillary electrophoresis
Criteria for evaluation Individual examination (oral).
