Learning Outcomes
Competences
Upon successful completion of the course, students are able to explain fundamental and advanced concepts from the listed areas of surface physics, including relevant theoretical and experimental methods. Furthermore, they will gain initial insights into current research questions and trends.

This lecture is methodically complemented by the exercise Oberflächenphysik I.

Skills Knowledge
Upon completing the course, students will possess the following skills. They are able to

  • understand and explain fundamental concepts and phenomena of surface physics (k1/k2);
  • formulate and interpret relevant laws and theories in a precise and analytical manner (k3);
  • assess the suitability and limitations of physical methods for investigating surfaces (k3);
  • apply learned physical principles to new or related questions (k4).
During the course, students will acquire knowledge in the following areas and concepts of surface science:

  • introduction to vacuum technology and surface analytics;
  • crystallography of surfaces and adsorbed layers, and their characterization with diffraction techniques and scanning probe microscopy;
  • electronic structure of surfaces.
Criteria for evaluation oral exam; dates by arrangement
