Learning Outcomes
Competences
After successful completion of the course, students are able to explain basic and advanced concepts from the listed areas of magnetism. They can use physical reasoning and problem-solving methods, and apply these to similar problems in the area of magnetism.
Skills Knowledge
Upon completing the course, students learn the following skills. They are able to

  • understand and explain basic concepts and phenomena of magnetism (k1/k2);
  • transfer the basic principles of magnetism to more advanced problems in the area of magnetism (k3/k4);
  • formulate and interpret physical laws and simple theories and understand their limitations (k4/k5).
During the course, students acquire knowledge in the following areas and concepts of magnetism:

  • basic concepts of magnetism and electromagnetism;
  • magnetic units;
  • Dirac equation and spin, atomic magnetic moments;
  • dia- and paramagnetism;
  • magnetism of condensed matter, local vs. itinerant description;
  • ferroic order phenomena;
  • exchange interaction and mechanisms, mean-field model;
  • magnetic phase transitions, thermal excitations;
  • magnetic hysteresis, magnetic anisotropy.
