Learning Outcomes
Competences
Upon successful completion of the course, students are able to describe fundamental concepts in the listed areas of mechanics. They can transfer their knowledge to systematically solve more advanced problems in the area of mechanics. Furthermore, they are able to apply problem-solving methods to concrete examples.

This exercise is methodically complemented by the lecture Theoretische Mechanik.

Skills Knowledge
Upon completing the course, students learn the following skills. They are able to

  • explain physical problems and concepts as well as mathematical solutions (k2);
  • work out solutions to mathematical problems in the field of mechanics (k3);
  • transfer concepts and solution approaches to new and unknown problems and select and apply suitable mathematical methods (k3/k4);
  • present their solutions to the group and discuss different approaches (k3/k4).
During the course, students acquire knowledge in the following areas and concepts of mechanics:

  • basic concepts of mechanics (physics), Newton's axioms, conservation variables;
  • systems of mass points, rigid bodies, accelerated frames of reference, restrictions of motion;
  • D'Alembert's principle, Lagrange equations, small oscillations;
  • motion in the central field, planetary motion;
  • scattering of particles;
  • Hamilton's principle, Hamilton's equations of motion, Hamilton-Jacobi theory;
  • transition to quantum mechanics.
Criteria for evaluation (1) Number/quality of successfully solved problems and, eventually, (2) written tests
Details will be announced at the beginning of the semester.
