Learning Outcomes
Competences
After successfully completing the course, students are able to explain basic concepts of the mathematical methods listed below. They can transfer their knowledge to systematically solve more advanced physical problems, using the mathematical methods they have learned. Furthermore, they are able to apply problem-solving methods to concrete examples.

This lecture is methodically complemented by the lecture Mathematische Methoden in der Physik

Skills Knowledge
Upon completing the course, students learn the following skills. They are able to

  • explain physical problems and concepts as well as mathematical solution processes (k2);
  • work out mathematical solutions to mathematical problems in the field of mathematical methods in physics independently or in a group (k3);
  • transfer concepts and solution approaches to new and unknown problems and select and apply suitable mathematical methods (k3/k4);
  • present their own solutions in front of the group and discuss the solutions (k3/k4).
During the course, students acquire knowledge of the following mathematical methods which are relevant to physics:

  • functions of one and more variables;
  • limiting values;
  • differential and integral calculus;
  • matrices and determinants;
  • linear systems of equations and eigenvalue problems;
  • vector algebra and vector analysis;
  • curvilinear coordinates;
  • ordinary differential equations;
  • complex numbers;
  • Taylor and Fourier series.
Criteria for evaluation (1) number/quality of successfully solved problems, (2) quality of presentations/engagement during the exercise class and, eventually, (3) written tests
Details will be announced at the beginning of the semester.
