After successful completion of the course, students are able to describe basic and advanced concepts from the listed areas of waves, optics and photonics. They can apply the reasoning and problem-solving methods of physics and transfer them to specific physical systems.
This lecture is methodically complemented by the exercise Grundlagen der Physik III (Wellen, Optik und Photonik).

Upon completing the course, students learn the following skills. They are able to
- understand and explain basic concepts and phenomena of waves, optics and photonics (k1/k2);
- formulate and interpret physical laws and theories in a precise and analytical manner (k3);
- transfer the principles of waves, optics and photonics to other advanced physical problems (k3).
|
During the course, students acquire knowledge in the following areas and concepts of waves, optics and photonics:
- Maxwell's equations, wave equation, mechanical and electromagnetic waves;
- refractive index and dispersion;
- reflection, transmission and refraction;
- polarization and anisotropic materials;
- Fresnel's equations;
- geometrical optics;
- optical instruments;
- interference and coherence;
- wave optics;
- diffraction.
