(*)Students will be able to understand and explain the basic principles of inorganic materials, focusing on their structure, properties, synthesis methods, and fundamental applications.

(*)Upon completion of the course, students will be able to • understand and explain the atomic and molecular structure of inorganic materials. (k2, k3) • identify the key properties of inorganic materials, including physical, chemical and mechanical properties. (k1, k4) • explain common synthesis methods for inorganic materials and their impact on material properties. (k2, k5) • understand and analyse the electrochemical properties of inorganic materials, including electrolysis and corrosion resistance for specific applications. (k2, k4). • assess the potential applications of different inorganic materials in various technological fields. (k5, k6) (*)Underlying concepts and details of • water properties, treatment and applications • hydrogen properties and applications • electrode kinetics • chemistry of chlorine • thermodynamics and phase transformations • oxygen and nitrogen properties and their applications • aluminium production (Bayer and Hall-Héroult processes) • pyro/hydro metallurgical processes of copper • carbon-based materials • sulphuric acid production • production, properties and applications of phosphorous and its compounds • production, properties and applications of silicon and its compounds • production, properties and applications of halogens • modern applications of various inorganic materials
Beurteilungskriterien (*)profound knowledge of the lecture content is required to answer the questions in the written exam, 10 questions with 10 points each are given where 2 consist of 5 multiple / single choice questions, other questions are divided into subquestions all aiming at different aspects of the same topic
Lehrmethoden (*)elements and processes are presented by occurence or process, whatever is more appropriate from the technical view point, principles are explained and reasoning is given for the selection of certain processes
Abhaltungssprache Englisch
Literatur (*)frequent participation in the lecture is required, slides of the lecture are available in KUSSS a few hours before the lecture, parts of the reactions, principles, drawings and processes are explained at the board, examples of materials and devices are shown in the lecture
