Learning Outcomes
Competences
Students will gain a basic understanding of physical chemistry and are able to calculate examples regarding gaseous reactions, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, quantum statistics and electrochemistry.
Skills Knowledge
The following skills should be held by the students upon completing this course: • Calculate fundamental properties of gaseous reactions and critically evaluate potential safety risks (k1, k2, k3) • Calculate energy transfomation in thermodynamic processes and assess their use in chemical and industrial applications (k2, k4, k5) • Evaluate data through the help of Excel or other similar programs (k5) • Basic understanding of quantum mechanics and simple calculations of energetic levels (k2, k3) • Present a calculation to peers and explain the theoretical background (k2, k5) This class covers five different topics: • Ideal gas and van-der-Waals equation as well as gas kinetics • In-depth thermodynamics and application on chemical reactions • Fundamentals of statistical thermodynamics • Fundamentals of quantum mechanics • Electrochemical processes
