Learning Outcomes
Competences
This seminar builds upon the learning outcomes that were defined for the VL Catalysis. The students will be able to independently solve numerical problems and complete task that are related to chemical syntheses involving catalysis. Moreover, they will become acquainted with the presentation of their worked-out solutions and scientific data in front of an audience.
Skills Knowledge
The contents of the seminar will enable the students to • derive of rate laws of chemical reactions (k2, k3) • calculate of rate constants, reaction rates, and activation energies (k2, k3, k4) • determinate reaction mechanisms (k2, k3, k4) • compare of catalytic and stoichiometric reactions with respect to atom-efficiency (k4, k5) • assessment of the catalytic capabilities of metal complexes (k3, k4, k5) • design of efficient syntheses of useful molecules (k3, k6) • elaborate catalytic cycles (k3, k4) • Organometallic key reactions: - oxidative addition - reductive elimination - insertion reactions - hydride elimination reactions - oxidative ligation • E-factor calculations • role and properties of L, X, and Z ligands • 18-electron rule and its consequences • determination of valence electron counts (ionic model vs. neutral model) • kinetic/thermodynamic calculations • reaction mechanisms of important transformations
