Learning Outcomes
Competences
After successfully completing the course, students will be able to

  • read notation used in calculus textbooks
  • understand the most important properties of sequences and real valued

functions.

Skills Knowledge
Students learn the following skills:

  • solving problems involving real numbers, sets of numbers and real

valued functions

  • computing solutions of equations by approximation
  • computing limits of sequences and real valued functions
  • differentiating functions
  • deciding convergence behaviour of series
  • determining local maxima and minima of real valued functions
  • using induction to prove relations between arithmetic terms.
Students learn the following concepts from analysis:

  • basic notions of elementary set theory
  • the hierarchy of number systems and cardinality
  • the real continuum
  • infimum and supremum
  • the concepts of inner point and adhaerent point
  • limits of sequences and functions
  • continuity and differentiability.
Criteria for evaluation oral or written exam (to be determined by the lecturer at the beginning of the semester)
