Kompetenzen
(*)The lecture conveys the principle of periodicity which allows the students to predict the reactivity of elements, ions, and their compounds in aqueous solution and assess potential hazards of chemical reactions that are to be conducted in the laboratory. The students will also be able to apply the introduced concepts to real word problems and connect their knowledge to environmental, biological, and industrial chemistry as well as geopolitics.
Fertigkeiten Kenntnisse
(*)On completion of the course the students are able to • subdivide the periodic table into s-, p-, d-, and f-block elements; • calculate the size of atoms, cations, and anions; • compute the electronegativity values of the elements of the periodic table; • calculate the hydration enthalpy of cations; • predict the chemical formula of oxoacids; • classify the acidities of cations and oxoacids; • predict the chemical formulas of fluoro compounds and oxoanions; • categorize the basicity of oxoanions; • systematically name inorganic salts and coordination compounds; • predict the predominant form of an element in natural waters; • estimate the shape of simple molecules. (*)Underlying concepts and details of • atomic, cationic, anionic, and van der Waals radii; • Pauling electronegativity scale; • valence electrons; • electron configurations of atoms and ions; • formal charges and oxidation states; • acidity and basicity categories; • orbitals and chemical bonding; • predominance diagrams; • theory of resonance; • nomenclature of inorganic compounds; • Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion (VSEPR) theory.
