Learning Outcomes
Competences
Students will gain an in-depth understanding of physical chemistry and are able to calculate examples regarding quantum mechanics, chemical bonding and spectroscopy, such as IR, UV-Vis and XRD.
Skills Knowledge
The following skills should be held by the students upon completing this course: • Solve the Schrödinger equation in a 3-dimensional system and apply the resulting wavefunctions (k1, k3) • Understand the quantum mechanical description of simple atoms and molecules and evaluate molecules according to these principles (k2, k3, k5) • Analyse spectroscopical data, understand the underlying principles and apply this understanding to real examples (k4, k5) • Present a calculation to peers and explain the theoretical background (k2, k5) This class covers three large subjects: • Schrödinger equation in hydrogen and multi-electron atoms and quantum mechanical description of molecular structures • Spectroscopic techniques (IR, UV-Vis, XRD) and their mechanistic principles • Symmetry of molecules
Criteria for evaluation written exam, attendance, homework
