Learning Outcomes
Competences
Students understand the role and function of extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) and their connection to oncogene amplification in cancer. They can perform advanced molecular techniques as well as imaging through microscopy techniques and molecular staining techniques and analysing and interpretation of results.
Skills
Knowledge
Performing premature chromosome condensation (PCC) to produce metaphase chromosomes.
Staining and visualizing ecDNAs.
Using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) to detect amplified oncogenes on ecDNA in human cancer cells.
Preparing slides and using a fluorescence microscope to observe experimental results.
Analyzing and interpreting experimental data related to ecDNA and oncogene amplification.
Describe experimental procedures and results.
The biological function and role of ecDNA in cancer.
Mechanisms of oncogene amplification and its connection to cancer progression.
Premature chromosome condensation (PCC).
Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH).
Fluorescence microscopy for visualizing molecular and cellular components in cancer cells.
Scientific reporting and data presentation in the context of laboratory research.
Criteria for evaluation
A minimum 75% attendance is required. Students need to write a scientific report describing brief experiment procedures and results (1-2 pages). The positive assessment is "participated successfully", the negative assessment is "participated without success".
Methods
Introduction and supervision of experimental skills in medical teaching laboratory
