Objectives |
Based on the concepts of solid-state physics, this lecture presents the fundamentals of semiconductor Physics. The acquired knowledge forms the basis for understanding working principles of semiconductor devices.

Introduction - historical notes on semiconductors; General properties of semiconductors; Crystal structures, reciprocal lattice; Electrons in a periodic potential; Bloch's theorem; Empty lattice model; Quasi-free electron model; Energy bandgaps and effective masses; Pseudopotential method, tight-binding and single-band k.p method for bandstructure calculation; Effective mass and electron velocity; Semiclassical model of electron transport; Cyclotron resonance and basic optical properties.
