Objectives Students will be introduced to different forms of political power and dominance, to different political systems and their transformation; to theories of democracy, the state and politics as well as different concepts of power and dominance against the background of globalisation and multiple crisis tendencies of modern societies. A particular focus will be put on welfare states and social policies and their developments in the last decades, as they are of crucial significance for the shaping and reproduction of modern societies. An emphasis will be put on social movements and changing political ideologies, their social origins as well as concepts to shape modern societies.
Subject 1. Concepts of political power and dominance, democracy and the state 2. Relations between states/politics and society and their changes 3. Welfare states and social policies and the shaping and reproduction of social relations. 4. Social movements and political ideologies and their concepts to shape modern societies
Further information According to the curriculum of the Bachelor of Sociology at the JKU two Special Sociologies have to be chosen. For each one introductory course and one specialising course has to be chosen.
