Objectives Exercise on the most important concepts of optics and wave phenomena. Introduction to the scientific approach and methods of solving problems in physics. Application of these methods to specific physical systems.
Subject Maxwell equations, wave equation, refractive index and dispersion; reflexion, transmission and refraction, polarization and anisotropic materials; Fresnel equations; geometrical optics; optical devices; interference and coherence; wave optics; diffraction; guided waves; basics of photonics.
Criteria for evaluation (1) number of successfully solved exercises and (2) quality of the presentation and participation in the exercise class.
Methods Autonomous solution of problems (individually or in small groups) and presentation of these solutions in the class.
