Detailed information
Original study plan Master's programme Mechanical Engineering 2023W
Objectives In order to improve the mechanical properties and/or reduce the costs, engineering polymers are frequently combined with various filler materials. This combination of polymer matrix materials and particulate fillers (polymers for blends and minerals) or fibers results in a highly heterogenous microstructure. The specific processing significantly influences these structures and the structure/property relationships.
Subject Novel computational material science approaches allows for the design of heterogenous material at various length scale (from molecular up to macroscopic level). These methods will be introduced along with the computational tools available in the lecture. Several uses cases demonstrates both tha applicability of the various compounds as well as the applicability of the computational material design. In addition to the conventional "design WITH materials" methodology, the novel approach "design THE materials" will also be introduced and explained. Special attention will be dedicated to the design of recycled materials.
Criteria for evaluation 80 % written exam, 8 questions 20 % presenation of the home work (selected compund and simple simulation of the stiffness of the selected compound suing different constituents)
Methods Lecture Examples of simulations The content of the lecture might be changed, different material goups (constituents) and applications will be selected as focus in a specific semester
