Ziele (*)In this course we take an action perspective to make students understand that entrepreneurship only materializes through behavior. It happens in a certain place and at a certain time. The socially situated nature of entrepreneurship calls for a contextualized understanding of entrepreneurial intentions and actions. Students will get aware of the contingencies in the entrepreneurial process. The focus will be on the regional dimension of the embeddedness of entrepreneurship.
Lehrinhalte (*)Entrepreneurship fosters innovation and growth because of the action entrepreneurs take and the action they make others take. Neither social nor entrepreneurial mission of these entrepreneurs impact on the place unless they result in activity. Neither entrepreneurship policies nor strategic spatial planning make a change in a place unless they are translated into action. What makes a change in a place is what is done in the place. This action focus on entrepreneurship helps to overcome several confusions in research and the public discourse regarding the definition of what it is, the role and identity of the individual and its embeddedness, the role of the organization and its legal form as well as the divide between the American and the European schools of thought. While we heavily build on the rich literature that has emerged from these discourses, our focus is not so much on the foundation of entrepreneurship. Rather, we push the thinking forward by focussing on what those who pursue entrepreneurial activity actually do and how this action impacts the place e.g. in terms of innovation and growth.
