Special competence in informatics is acquired by selecting courses of the master curriculum Computer Science at JKU to a minimum extent of altogether 12 ECTS or 6 ECTS, if a focus of study is chosen, by one or more of the following alternatives:
(a) Choice of courses from one subject: By selecting 12, 18, or 24 ECTS from a single subject specified by the table below. Alternative (a) may be chosen two times for separate subjects where each must account for 12 ECTS and is headed "Special competence in informatics - X" in the graduation certificate, where X is the name of the subject from which courses were chosen.
(b) Free choice of courses: By selecting 6 or 12 ECTS from compulsory and elective courses of the master curriculum "Computer Science". Alternative (b) may only be chosen once and is headed "Special competence in informatics - Selected topics in informatics (Master)" in the graduation certificate. Choosing 6 ECTS is only allowed if an additional subject from (a) or the subject "Selected topics in informatics (Master, Abroad)" is chosen or if the study is completed with a certain focus of study.
(c) Choice of courses as specified by a focus of study: By selecting courses of the subject "Special competence in informatics" as specified by a focus of study according to § 9, if the study is completed with this focus of study. Alternative (c) is headed "Special competence in informatics - Focus of study" in the graduation certificate.
In case of lectures with accompanying exercise, both courses have to be taken.
Courses that overlap to a large extent concerning contents with compulsory subjects of Business Informatics are excluded from the choice. These are:

- KV Integrated Information Systems (3)
- KV Knowledge Based Systems (3)
- KV Conceptual Data Modeling (3)
- KV Semantic Data Modeling and Applications (3)
- VL Ethics and Gender Studies (3)
- KV Computational Data Analytics (3)
The type of exam of the assigned subjects in the context of the master curriculum Business Informatics is an accumulative subject examination.
