Ziele (*)This course introduces students to a range of mathematical concepts and techniques that form the basis for applications inside and outside chemistry, such as the ones required of students enrolled in Biological Chemistry/Chemistry Bachelor and Master programs. The course provides an introduction to the mathematics. During the exercise classes, the application of different mathematical techniques and methods is considered and confirmed by numerous examples. The aim of the course is to provide students with a detailed overview of the major mathematical ideas and methods for solving general and chemistry-related practical problems.
Lehrinhalte (*)The following mathematical topics are covered:
Vectors: Basic definition of two, three and N-dimensional vectors, components of and algebraic calculations with vectors, coordinate systems, bases and linear independence of vectors, scalar product and cross product of vectors, projection and orthogonality of vectors.

Functions: Definition, representations and examples of functions; symmetry, invertability and composition of functions; fundamental functions (polynomials, exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric functions etc) and their qualitative properties; sequences and series and limits of sequences and series; limits and continuity of functions; differentiation, extreme values of functions, convexity/concavity of functions, full analysis of qualitative properties of functions.
Beurteilungskriterien (*)The final grade is based on the written exam at the end of the semester (two exam dates are available in KUSSS) This exam is worth 100 points. To pass the course, at least 50 points must be reached. Additional examination is possible at the beginning of the summer semester.
