Detailed information
Original study plan Bachelor's programme Mechanical Engineering 2020W
Objectives Transfer of knowledge and skills to select proper or optimal materials for the design of mechanical systems.
Subject Most relevant engineering materials are presented, emphasizing material properties most important for product design. Systematic methods of material selection are elaborated by practical examples. Further aspects like, legal constraints, production, maintenance, as well as costs, recycling, environmental impact, and customer acceptance are taken into account. Presented are the main groups of construction materials:

  • metals
  • ceramics and glasses
  • polymers and elastomers
  • composites.
Criteria for evaluation Written exam with half textual answers to questions and half calculations.
Methods Basic and practical metzhods for materialselection for specific design tasks in mechnaical engineering and plastic engieering are included.
