Objectives Students understand the concepts and requirements of a stable server infrastructure. Students have the (basic) skills to setup and work with common services. Students realize that reliability, availability and "least privilege" are essential to successful System Administration.
Subject Server administration based on Linux / Windows;

  • Storage Management
  • Recovery & Backup
  • Service Planning
  • Selected Services (e.g. ADS, DNS, HTTP(S), SMTP(S), …)
  • Virtualization
  • Infrastructure as Code.

These topics are presented as an overview. A selected set is also practiced in the hands-on labs.

Criteria for evaluation Grading is based on participation in lectures and lab exercises, the oral presentation of example scenarios and a final written examination. To pass the course, students must successfully pass all three sections.
Methods Lecture including discussions as well as accompanying practical lab exercises; Students prepare and present a final example scenario.

  • Whitepapers and manuals of the vendors of server software used in the lab.
