Objectives |
- to teach how the development of economic thought in its various forms and directions should be understood in general - between successive advances, epochal upheavals and also recurring problems. With which scientific-theoretical opinions do these developmental characteristics go hand in hand?
- To understand the connection between social and economic processes, the dominant thinking in an era and this in the context of perception and theory building on economic processes. Which respective schools of thought have emerged in the context of these factors?
- to teach the respective forms of thought and the transition to new ways of thinking by contradicting old opinions on the one hand and changing perspectives between the respective epochs on the other - this also as path-dependent developments in the context of economic policy objectives and economic interests

Subject |
The course deals with the emergence and development of economic thinking and here at the interface between
(1) processes of social thought and change,
(2) economic development as well and
(3) the reflection and theoretical analysis of it.
This problematizes economic thinking as a cultural history with interdisciplinary standards.
The respective theoretical views are dealt with along the typical economic lines of thought in the respective time periods and in the context of the economic developments at that time, their socio-political framework and embedded in the respective epochal thinking.
Chronologically, the course begins with thinking in antiquity, continues through thinking in the Roman Empire and in the Middle Ages, mercantile thinking, the physiocratic conceptions, the thinkers of the classical to the historical school. The course begins with a detailed introduction to the perspectives on the theory of science and the sociology of science for the development of economic thinking.

Criteria for evaluation |
Three short tests on the content of the previous lectures. For a positive evaluation, 50% can be achieved per test.
