Objectives Students will develop an awareness and critical reflection of their own culture which will help in understanding Italian culture. The course includes discussions on various cultural concepts and dimensions, recognizing the correlations between language and cultural identity, and conveying a portrait of Italy and Italian culture today.
Subject The course focuses on the following distinctions in the Italian culture and within the European Union:

  • the relevance of cultural and identity forming events, personalities and milestones in history, literature, art, culture and media, i.e. the 1861 Unification of Italy
    • Regions and their distinctions
    • Problems between the North and South
    • The meaning of family, "Mammoni", the declining birthrate, the ageing population
    • Immigration: Immigration policy changing, handling xenophobia
  • Culturally influenced communication barriers and successfully dealing with special gender aspects;
  • Correlations between political structures and the current media landscape in Italy;
    • The Berlusconi Phenomena
    • Power structures and how they are integrated in politics, the economy, church, and organized crime (Vatican, Mafia, Camorra, etc.)
  • Differentiating between various styles of communication and language in context to attain communication behaviors and deal with situations.
  • Exemplary portrayal of the effects on culture-specific characteristics regarding the perception behavior, values, political and economic systems, and the correlations in comparison with one's own culture and the Italian culture.
Criteria for evaluation Class participation; oral and written work, continual grading on performance and participation during the semester.
