Objectives Through discussions, students will develop an awareness of their own culture in order to support an understanding of French culture. The course includes discussions on various cultural concepts and dimensions as well as recognizing the correlations between language and cultural identity. The course will convey a current account French culture.
Subject The distinctions of French culture within the European Union take the following topics into account:

  • relevant cultural and identity forming events, personalities and milestones in history, literature, arts, culture and media such as: the heritage of absolutism and the French revolution:
    • The French understanding of equality and liberty, and the entitlement of universality
    • Centralism and the ideal of a nation-state: the affects on politics, social issues, economics and culture.
    • Elite: Power and (through) education. Education and culture and their values
    • Country and religion: laicism.
  • culturally determined communication barriers and their successful accomplishment under consideration of gender aspects;
  • Correlations between political structures and France's current media landscape;
  • Differentiation between various communication styles and context specific language to be able to communicate appropriately in certain situations
  • Exemplary portrayal of effects of culture specific characteristics of behavior, values, political and economic systems and correlations in comparison with one's own culture and the culture in France.
Criteria for evaluation Class participation; oral and written work, continual participation will be graded during the semester.
