Competences
  • Students are able read and understand economic papers and can also evaluate their quality.
  • Students are able to apply descriptive methods and regression methods to real data and provide correct interpretations thereof

  • Develop simple regression models
  • Run descriptive and regression methods in standard statistical packages (R, Stata)
  • be able to interpret and critically evaluate the outcomes of regression analyses
  • be able to formulate empirical model specifications
  • Apply simple descriptive methods to real data
  • Apply statistical regression methods to real data
  • Apply different empirical specifications and model variation
  • Interpret empirical results correctly

Course Topics

  • Introduction into the statistical package Stata
  • Descriptive data analysis
  • Graphical representation of data
  • Estimation of linear regression models and model specifications in Stata
  • Interpretation of estimation results based on real data
Criteria for evaluation
  • In total, students can reach 80 points on the problems – a minimum of 40 points is necessary to be eligible for the exam and obtain a positive grade. The exam has 40 points in total. Students need a minimum of 50 percent to obtain a positive grade.
  • Problem Sets: there are 4 problem sets which have to be submitted via moodle. Solution is discussed in class
  • Computer exam: : Individual exam, there is a possibility to repeat it in case of negative results or scheduling issues (retry exam). The exam consists of practical questions based on real data.

All learning outcomes are achieved by problem sets and exam jointly.
