Objectives This course is intended to provide students with an understanding of the challenges of interacting, managing and leading people from various cultural and national backgrounds when conducting business in a global context.

This course runs from September to April and is taught in Canada, Taiwan and Austria. The course begins with cultural issues and challenges at the interpersonal level. It then proceeds to the cultural challenges faced by firms as they move along the internationalization process, from exporters to multinational organizations.

Subject There are a total of 16 3-hour sessions involving a combination of lectures and case discussions. 4 sessions will be held in Victoria with the remaining 12 sessions divided equally between Kaohsiung (Taiwan) and Linz (Austria) The course is taught jointly by Prof. Dr. Ignace Ng (IN) (University of Victoria) and Prof. Dr. Evelyne Glaser (EG) (JKU).   • Eastern versus Western Ways of thinking (EG)
  • Group Processes (EG)
  • Post Merger Integration Issues (IN)
  • Selection, Compensation and Training (IN)
  • Cultural Adaptation (EG)
  • Managerial Issues in a subsidiary (IN)
  • Organizational Practices in a subsidiary (IN)
Criteria for evaluation
  • written assignments (case analyses) 60%

  • reflective essays 20%
