Master's programme Polymer Technologies and Science (PTS) 2015W
Objectives
The core compulsory subject "Polymeric Materials and Testing" provides competences in the fields of materials science and engineering of polymeric materials along with the methodologies of characterization and testing of these materials on an advanced level. It covers the entire range of polymeric materials including the various types of plastics (thermoplastics and thermosets), elastomers, composites and hybrid materials. Special emphasis is given to material structure formation and material structure-property-performance relationships. By covering both structural and functional polymeric materials, much attention is given to the increasing demand towards multi-functional polymers and material property profiles, in order to reduce the material intensity performance unit (light weight design), particularly under complex loading situations (static and cyclic long-term loading and environmental effects).
Subject
The core compulsory subject "Polymeric Materials and Testing" contains two sub-groups of courses. The first sub-group covers aspects of polymer synthesis, polymer structure formation and the chemistry and physics of polymer surfaces and interfaces. It contains the following courses:
- Industrial Chemistry for Plastic Enineering (lecture) - Chemical Interactions in Polymers (lecture) - Structure Development in Polymeric Materials (lecture) - Physical Chemistry of Surfaces and Interfaces (lecture)
The second sub-group covers topics related to properties and material structure-property-performance relationships of polymeric materials and includes the following courses:
- Polymeric Materials 3: Polymer Mechanics and Fracture Mechanics (lecture) - Polymeric Materials 4: Polymeric Functional Materials (lecture and seminar) - Characterization and Testing of Polymeric Materials 2 (laboratory course)
