Detailed information
Pre-requisites For safety reasons at least 30 credits verifiably from chemical practicals (laboratory courses with experimental activity of the student) or admission to the master curriculum Biological Chemistry ( positive completion of the "bridge laboratory course" if this has been stipulated)
Original study plan Master's programme Joint Master Programme Biological Chemistry 2016W
Objectives The students will learn independent preparation and execution of multi-step organic syntheses as well as isolation of natural occurring compounds including literature search and use, laboratory safety and required analytical and separation techniques.

Subject Several assignments to synthesize or isolate substances from the existing chemical literature in cooperation with researchers. Task include literature searches, implementing procedures, setting up of lab equipment, controlling the reactions, purifying the products and spectroscopic analysis.
Criteria for evaluation Performance in the practical execution (purity and yield), compliance with safety rules, knowledge of scientific and technical background to the specific tasks, adequate reporting (lab protocols).
Methods Chemistry laboratory work with individualized instructions. Literature search using the library and electronic resources (e.g.: SciFInder).
