Objectives Introducing basic concepts of genetics from a chemist's perspective

Preparation for the genetics and molecular biology classes in year 2
Subject Part I: Foundations of genetics, structure of DNA, Replication, Coding function of DNA

Part II: The genetic code, translation, co-linearity of gene and protein, tRNA, protein structure an folding, postsynthetic modifications, enzyme catalysis

Part III: Gene technology, plasmids, cloning vectors, DNA cloning and amplification, DNA sequencing, polymerase chain reaction, clone banks, cDNA cloning, genomic cloning, screening of clone banks, prokaryotic gene regulation: the lac-operon

Part IV: Genome structure, chromatin structure, chromosomes and nuclear domains, the genome remains constant in development, nuclear cloning, eukaryotic gene expression, trancriptomics, proteomics, the mitotic and meiotic cell cycle, life cycles of eukaryotes, recombination, crossing over, genetic mapping

Part V: Applications of Mendel’s laws, meiotic tetrads and the 2:2 segregation, the back cross, two factor crosses, application of mathematical probability theory, sex-linked inheritance, the human Y chromosome, mitochondrial inheritance, pedigree analysis, prenatal diagnosis, tests for heterozygosity, glossary of genetic terms
