Objectives Students will obtain a deeper insight into the general concepts of chemistry and its role as the central science describing all compounds and their transformations.
Subject General Overview, Fundamental Chemical Terms, Aggregate States of Matter, Chemical Elements, Important Models and Concepts in Chemistry, Atomic Structure, Periodic Table of the Elements, Atomic Models and Quantum Numbers, Electron Configurations and Chemical Properties, The Chemical Bond (Metallic, Ionic, Covalent, Coordinative), Structure and Reactivity of Molecules, Coordination Polyeders, Closest Packing Structures, Salt Structures, Amorphous and Crystalline Solids, Overview on the most important Basic Types of Chemical Reactions, Solubility of Compounds, Acid-Base Theories and their Application, Redox-Processes, Electrochemical Series, Chemical Equilibrium and Catalysis, Introduction to the Atomistic and Molecular Foundations of Materials Sciences.
