Original study plan Master's programme Computer Science 2013W
Objectives Introduction to wireless networks. The focus mainly lies on infrastructure networks, which means WLANs (Wireless Local Area Networks) that use a central coordination point (access point) for the entire communication of one cell.

The main goals of the lecture are to provide a general overview of the functionality of wireless networks, as well as to present the most important WLAN standard IEEE 802.11 in detail.

Subject
  • WLAN physical layer (differences to wired networks, electro-magnetic-radiation, frequency bands and channels, line-of-sight and none-line-of-sight communication, modulation, spreading, line codes, hidden/exposed terminal problem)
  • IEEE 802.11 functionality (standard and amendments (a/b/g/n), CSMA/CA, RTS/CTS, frame format and frame types, management functionalities, Ethernet/WLAN bridging)
  • IEEE 802.11 security (WEP, WPA, WPA2, IEEE 802.1X, EAP)
  • Practical part with lectures focused on IEEE 802.11 security in the network lab (approximately 4 units)
Criteria for evaluation Written exam (45 minutes) + active student participation (especially during the practical part in the network lab)
Methods Lecture as well as practical part in the University network lab.
