Objectives This course gives an introduction to biophysical concepts that are important for the understanding of biological processes at a cellular and sub-cellular level.
Subject Starting from statistical thermodynamics the self organization of membranes is demonstrated and the importance of non-covalent interactions and lipid structures is shown. Calorimetric and microscopic methods for the examination of membrane phase transitions are explained. The examination of the lipid mobility leads to Fick's law of diffusion, osmosis and the analysis of the diffusion in an electrical field. Electrokinetic phenomena, electrochemical double layers and energy profile of charged molecules lead to transport processes through a membrane and the accompanying electrical potentials (resting potential and action potential). Electrical and chemical stimulus needs an introduction to the molecular machinery of exozytose and endozytose.
