Detailed information
Original study plan Bachelor's programme Technical Physics 2011W
Objectives The course provides an overview of the concepts and the main experimental and theoretical methods in surface science. The emphasis lies on the microscopic understanding of the structural, physical and chemical properties of surfaces.
Subject The first part of the course covers the following topics:
1) Introduction to vacuum technology and surface analytics,
2) Crystallography of surfaces and adsorbed layers and their characterization with diffraction techniques and scanning probe microscopy,
3) Electronic structure of surfaces.
Criteria for evaluation oral exam, dates by arrangement.
Language German or English
Study material Lecture notes covering both parts of the course are available (presently only in German). In addition, all slides and supplementary information presented in the class will be distributed in electronic form. References for further reading will be given in the class.
