Objectives The course gives an overview of the relevant economic backgrounds for Web Sciences at an introductory level. The contents are structured in three areas: quantitative business economics, behavioral business administration and microeconomic issues. In the economic part, micro-economic basics and the basics of industrial organisation should enable economic decision-making processes in the field of communication and information technology markets. The behavioral part of business administration gives insight into topics on three levels: individual, group and organization and provides concepts to be applied to the web and web-based projects. Quantitative business economics: students can name main goals of accounting and can explain basic terms of this area.
Subject In the economic part, we deal with the basic functioning of markets (types of markets) and consider the specifics of communication and information technology markets. We discuss strategies for product and price differentiation by information goods (keywords: delaying, versioning, bundling, personalized pricing). In addition, we look at strategic aspects of system decisions (keywords: lock-in, switching cost), the economic perspective of network externalities, and economic aspects of dealing with intellectual property rights. Behavioral business administration: introduction to management and its different parts; strategy process; Selected topics on individual, group, and organizational level in relation to the web: motivation, power, communication, leadership, Teams, virtual organizations etc.; Introduction to marketing with the help of and on the Web; basics on logistics related to the web; project management.
Quantitative business economics: Basics of accounting and cost accounting with consideration of the web. Cost accounting: costs, controlling, finance, capital investment. Accounting: bookkeeping, cash accounting, balance sheets, annual accounts, taxes.
